In Martin Scorceses veelgeprezen documentaire ‘Bob Dylan – No Direction Home’, waarin de elementaire elektrische invloed van de Beatles op Dylan volledig wordt genegeerd, is Dylan aanvankelijk vooral een bijzondere muzikale spons. Muziek en teksten van Robert Johnson, Blind Willie McTell, Blind Lemon Jefferson, Muddy Waters, Sam ‘Lightnin’ Hopkins, Josh White, Woody Guthrie, Hank Williams, Jimmie Rodgers, Gene Vincent, Mississippi Sheiks en Chuck Berry worden gretig opgezogen, razendsnel eigen gemaakt en daarna met hart en ziel uitgevoerd. Het immense oeuvre van Bob Dylan, waarin sterk uiteenlopende vocale, muzikale en tekstuele invloeden uit de 20ste-eeuwse muziek op unieke wijze zijn versmolten, is in meerdere opzichten een levend organisme dat latere generaties musici blijvend inspireert en motiveert. De Tilburgse singer songwriter Jacques Mees, die recentelijk bij de Battle Of The Dylan Cover Bands met zijn indrukwekkende interpretatie van One too many mornings een eervolle derde prijs behaalde, presenteert onder de titel Shooting Star – Jacques Mees sings Bob Dylan bij wijze van hommage (Dylan wordt 70) een cd met twaalf covers van Bob Dylan nummers. De tracklist, die bijna vijftig jaar overbrugt, maakt in een oogopslag duidelijk dat het om een atypische en eigenzinnige bloemlezing handelt. Onder de voortreffelijk opgenomen nummers bevinden zich krachtig gearrangeerde en smaakvol ingekleurde uitvoeringen van As I went out one morning, One more cup of coffee, Girl from the North Country, Tomorrow is a long time en het titelnummer Shooting Star dat in 1989 Dylans cd Oh Mercy gloedvol afsloot. Op het prachtige, ruimtelijke openingsnummer As I went out one morning zingt Jacques Mees Dylans tekst met gevoelvolle en doorleefde stem. Bij wijze van contrapunt is een fraaie, ijlere tweede stem in het gevarieerde muzikale landschap gezet. Door telkens andere instrumenten zoals bluesharp, bouzouki, mandoline, orgel en pedalsteel in de mix te betrekken en subtiel met verschillende stemmen om te gaan is een veelzijdige en qua klankkleur genuanceerde cd ontstaan. Shooting Star van Jacques Mees doet muzikaal en vocaal echt recht aan Bob Dylans fascinerende meesterschap en sluit naadloos aan bij schitterende covers van Willard Grant Conspiracy (Ballad of a thin man), Chris Whitley en Jeff Lang (When I paint my masterpiece), Songdog (Desolation Row) en Warren Zevon (Knocking on heavens door).
